FRONT ZIPPER:
Code requires that flame resistant garments be designed for quick and easy
removal. This is why we make the extra effort to install a series of high-tension
snaps. This system has two significant benefits: the first is that conductive
material is not outwardly exposed, nor does it come in contact with the
wearer’s body; the second advantage is that it allows for quick and easy
exit from the garment.
Benchmark coveralls do not come stock with zippers, however upon request
we can retrofit your coveralls with a flame resistant tape zipper. While
zippers are not the most ideal “quick release” closure they are accepted
in certain industries. All Benchmark coveralls come stock with quick release,
high tension front snap closures spaced no more than three inches apart.
This configuration is the safest and most comfortable configuration because
it uses less conductive material than a brass zipper and the closures are
isolated from both the wearer and the ignition source with multiple layers
of flame resistant material.
It’s important to understand why various codes ask that flame resistant
garments be easily removed. After an incident its possible that underwear
or inner layers of clothing may have ignited. This person could be unconscious
or running in a state of panic while fanning the flames. Usually a second,
uninjured person, removes the victims clothing and extinguishes any continuing
flames. Can you imagine trying to un-zip a zipper while a person in running
around in a state of shock?
It take six times more manufacturing time to align, install a four part
closure and finish the garment around the closure than it would if we simply
installed a zipper. We choose this system because it’s the safest option
available for flame resistant coveralls.
After understanding the reasoning behind a quick release snap system, if
a zipper is desired, we will retrofit your coverall with a flame resistant
tapes zipper. Please contact your local Benchmark distributor; lead times
vary from two to five days.
LEG ZIPPERS:
On coveralls (style no. 4009, 4011 and 4014) we can replace our unique “adjustable
inseam” system and install a leg zipper in its place. Leg zippers are 8”
long and are made from flame resistant tapes and brass. Please contact your
Benchmark distributor with your inseam specification Lead times may vary
from two days to one week.
